I swear that the best posts that I’ll never write and you’ll never read are the ones I think of while driving or about to fall asleep. This doesn’t mean that they’re good or anything, I’m just talking comparatively to the poop that I usually leave here – to be kicked about, wiped off your shoe and walked away from with a confused look over your shoulder.
So with a vague recollection I’m trying to dredge the bottom of my brain for one I thought of last week. It was on the subject of how new technology tends to reference old technology to make the transition smoother and have at least 50% of the world think they know what’s going on. Of course I came to this non-startling revelation in regard to the internet. For some reason websites couldn’t really stand on their own as a, thing – let’s say. We had to call them something familiar, and this continues today. On the web we find Stores, Magazines, Journals, Portfolio’s etc. Not to mention the word “home” one billion times with a little house icon. Apparently it’s hard to let go of what’s familiar when we tred out into the cold, scary and shark filled waters of new technological advances.
I’m not sure that there is really anything wrong with this, it’s just an observation. I mean even the word “blog” or “weblog” is showing some advancement. It used to be “journal”. We’re starting to let go of the side and slide towards the deep-end.
I wonder if when we started writing on paper instead of chiseling stone tablet there was a similar transitional period. Maybe paper was called “portable lighter stone tablet that won’t break foot when dropped”.*
* the preceeding was much funnier in my head the first time. See the cashier for your money back.
