Shepard Fairey: Supply & Demand

February7

Enjoyed the Shepard Fairey: Supply & Demand exhibition at the ICA in Boston this weekend.

I’m not sure how I feel about the issue that Milton Glaser raises with regards to fair use, but his thoughts are worth the read if you care about this stuff (and if you’re a designer, you really should).

I like his style, but I agree that he is lifting a lot of work that’s not exactly public domain.

How did you feel about his arrest?

I have mixed feelings about it. I can’t completely agree with the manner in which he displays his art/social commentary, because in doing so I imagine that I have to say that it would be ok if he put a poster on the side of my house, and I’m not cool with that. BUT, I really do admire how he has used images of people who’s visage has evolved icon status to raise awareness of the amount of commercialism that we are swimming day to day. Personally, having seen his exhibition I think that I admired more of his pieces that largely devoid of pop imagery more than those that he’s famous for.
